What’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of a large pumpkin? Why, boat racing of course! From New York to Nova Scotia, people have been turning large pumpkins into miniature boats and racing them in local competitions.

I’m fond of spiders, yes I am,
or rather, nothing hold ‘gainst them.
I do not mind it when they spied,
as long as it is done outside,
or, at the least, not on my hide.
They’re elegant and lovely things,
and tops at easting pests with wings.
Still, while I like to know they’re there,
and snatching bugs out of the air,
I do not want them in my hair.
Small and jumpy, big with fuzz –
all of them are fine because
they stop their hexapodal kin
infesting my potato bin.
Just keep them, sweep them, off my skin.

One can always tell when Fall has arrived. The leaves begin to change, the air grows colder and the faint smell of nutmeg and cinnamon fill the air in the grocery stores. It’s that beautiful time of the year when the lighting shines flawlessly and photogenically through the trees and the local farmer’s markets are full of rich and flavorful autumn produce. Nothing beats pulling out the Halloween cases and smelling the great scent of Halloweens that have come and gone.

One of my all-time favorite Halloween movies has always been Kenny Ortega’s Hocus Pocus. I feel it captures the perfect image of what Halloween is to me. From the thought of seeing something sweep across the moon on a chilly October night to the sight of a fog covered graveyard through the towering old wrought-iron gate, the movie continues to inspire me.
